SPEED SERIES: Real-Time Harlequin Romance Novel Cover Application (<15 mins)
Â
You’ll see how I approach makeup when time is tight and there’s a clear creative direction to follow.
I’m working fast, making quick decisions, and focusing on what actually matters to get the look done—and done well.
Context for this Job:Â
- This makeup/hair was done for a Harlequin romance novel cover shoot.
- You can check out Harlequin covers here:Â Harlequin Books
- On these shoots, I do four covers a day, with two people per cover.
- We have one hour total for both hair and makeup on male and female talent.
- The makeup only needs to hold up for about an hour because the talent is photographed quickly.
- My main focus is on how the makeup photographs — not how it looks up close.
Why this Lesson Matters:Â
- You’ll see exactly how I adjust my application when time is extremely limited.
- You’ll learn how to prioritize what actually matters for the final photo.
- You’ll see how speed techniques are all about strategic decisions.
What I Focused On:Â
- Skin first — always the biggest priority for photography.
- Minimize eye and brow work because the model’s natural features were already strong.
- Choose textures and products that work with the skin and lighting conditions.
- Skip steps when possible without sacrificing the final result (example: using foundation under the eyes instead of separate concealer right away).
Extra Value Adds in This Lesson:Â
- How I adjust layering when working on textured or sunburned skin.
- Why I choose glowy finishes to balance lighting and create smoother-looking skin on camera.
- How I build eye definition quickly using bronzer and highlighter — no complex eyeshadow looks needed.
- Realistic look at how makeup can shift based on lighting, camera angles, and retouching.
Final Thought:Â
When you work on tight timelines, you have to think differently.
- Focus on the overall effect, not tiny details.
- Trust the products you know will perform.
- Keep moving forward — fix only what truly needs fixing.
At the end of this video, you’ll see how the final makeup translated on the monitor at the shoot — so you can see exactly how this fast application photographed.
